Frequently asked questions.

  • At this time Sober Start Texas is only admitting men into our sober living homes. However, our sisters in recovery are invited to take advantage of our virtual recovery and continued support resources.

  • Sober living homes offer a secure, drug-free atmosphere with recovery-oriented support systems to promote sustained sobriety over the long term. Typically, residents have the freedom to stay for as long as necessary. In contrast, halfway houses are often subsidized by government programs and have predetermined time limits for client stays.

  • Sober Start residents are required to complete a drug and/or alcohol test at least twice a month. Random drug and alcohol screens will also be administered during your stay.

  • We require residents maintain sobriety for at least 21 days prior to admission. While not required, we highly recommend anyone suffering from alcoholism and/or drug addiction complete, at a minimum, a 30-day drug and alcohol rehabilitation program prior to entering sober living.

  • No, Sober Start Texas provides structured, drug and alcohol-free group living homes, but we do not offer clinical treatment services. However, we do over virtual and post recovery resources to help those at any stage in their recovery journey.

  • There is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery, as such, we allow residents to stay for as little or as long as they need. If our staff feels you are ready to move on, we will encourage you to do so. However, so long as you stay in compliance with Sober Start Texas’ policies, you are welcome to stay as long as you need.

  • Yes! Addiction doesn’t discriminate and neither do we. We have a zero-tolerance discrimination policy in our admissions process and for those living in our homes.

  • Residents are expected to adhere to all guidelines set forth in the Sober Start Texas Community Guidelines document, please contact us and we are happy to share the guidelines in full. Some basic guidelines include:

    2. Not entering into a romantic relationship of any kind with other residents or staff

    3. Actively employed, seeking employment, volunteering or attending school at least 20 hours a week

    4. No smoking inside any sober living home. Smoking is allowed in outdoor areas as long as cigarette butts are disposed of appropriately

  • While we handle every resident’s journey on a case-by-case basis, Sober Start Texas’ number one priority is to help our clients get better. Enabling resident by providing multiple “chances” does not accomplish that goal. As a result, in most cases, a relapse will result in an automatic discharge from our sober living homes.
